In the 1990s Greg and Sue White gave up the rat race and corporate lifestyle, bought themselves a 48-foot yacht and started sailing around the pacific (as you do!). On board was their baby daughter Samantha who’d spend the first six months of her life at sea!
Taking shelter from the Pacific hurricane season they ended up in the Marlborough Sounds (maybe the on board wine supplies were running a bit low too?). They instantly fell in the love with the place and decided they’d put down roots and start a winery (as you do!). In 1994, Whitehaven was formed with the labels featuring an anchor symbol – a reminder of the importance of family, following your dreams, and the crazy things that can happen when you travel around the world in a 48-foot yacht!
In 2007 Greg sadly passed away but Sue continues to head the family business along with daughter Samantha, the little girl all grown up that spent her first six months on a Pacific adventure at sea!
This is the label they dedicated in the man’s honour. And boy, have they crafted one hell of a wine! Scoring 94/100 and a Top Ranking award by Master of Wine Bob Campbell.
Bob called it “Delicately aromatic sauvignon with passionfruit, red capsicum, gooseberry and citrus/lime flavours. Bright, tangy, refreshing wine with punchy flavours. Certainly one of the better wines from this vintage.”
