The Brennan family were one of the first in Central Otago’s Gibbston Valley to plant vines back in the mid 90s. For many years Sean (the winemaker, aka Mr Brennan) sold their fruit to Peregrine just down the road. Given how kick arse Peregrine’s wines are that’s a real testament to these guys.
They’re famous for their Pinot Noir (with some seriously big international accolades in the trophy cabinet) and have even been snapped being guzzled on a hit TV show in the US (Big Bang Theory). But they also produce an awesome range of aromatic style wines.
When life give you lemons, you make lemonade. Trio was a label born in 2013 when the guys at Brennan lost 80% of their fruit to a frost event. In an attempt to salvage what was left, a beautiful combination of their aromatic varieties was crafted. Over the years Trio has gained a bit of a following at their cellar door. It’s aromatic, refreshing and delicious!
They call this one “Trio” after the three grapes used in the blend – Riesling (50%), Gewürztraminer (40%) and Muscat (10%)/ It’s got a little bit of everything going on here – it’s full bodied with rich and spicy citrus and stone fruit flavours, a splash of sweetness and made in a medium-dry style.
Go on, branch out and try something different! And for our hot tip on a wine and food pairing – we reckon the Trio is just the wine to pair with spicy Asian cuisine like Thai, Indian or Chinese.
