Freixenet Chianti DOCG

Mamma mia! This is a little treasure of a deal from Tuscany!

While rummaging through an importer’s clearance list we came across this Chianti from Tuscany made by Freixenet (pronounced fresh-eh-net). They’re best known as one of the world’s most loved Spanish Cava producers but in recent years they’ve released Italian sparkling wines, Proseccos and this striking Chianti packaged in a bespoke diamond-cut glass bottle.

Pronounced “key-an-tee” – strict Italian wine laws mean grapes must be sourced entirely from one of the 8 Chianti regions in Tuscany and must be made with least 75% of the Sangiovese grape (this one’s 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot). Deciphering Italian wine labels can be a mission, which is why they have a handy three-tier system of quality. DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) is at the top so you know it’s the good stuff!

If you’re new to the world of wines from Tuscany and Chianti this is a great place to start. It’s a medium bodied, soft and juicy style red with cherry and plum fruit flavours. Made in a really easy drinking style and a great red to pair with spaghetti and meatballs, full flavoured pizzas or cold cuts like salami!
