Bests Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon

The Great Western. It’s a famous railway, it’s the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, it’s an album by the Manic Street Preachers, it’s one of Victoria’s secrets.

No, not the saucy lingerie place, the cool climate sub region in Victoria, Australia. Best’s are the winery and they recently notched up an impressive 150th candle on their birthday cake. Yep, since 1866 Best’s have been producing award winning wine in the region.

This is their Cabernet Sauvignon, using fruit from the Great Western area, and it’s a great introduction to the cool climate style Cabernet produced in this part of the wine world.

This is a beauty and worth every one of its whopper 95 points (out of 100) by experienced Aussie wine critic James Halliday. In fact, James has scored this Cabernet 95 Points for the 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2012 vintages! Cracker!

We’ll let the old dog describe this one – “Still a pup, but all the signs are excellent. Arms of minted blackcurrant; chubby legs of tannin; vanillin oak covering the belly. It’s still growing into itself but the fruit feels so pure you’d almost label it sincere; it hasn’t learned its tricks yet, but when it does, it will fascinate.” He reckons this has potential to cellar to 2040 and beyond!
