Church Road’s wine label celebrating the life of wine legend Tom McDonald (dubbed the “Father of red wine in New Zealand” by some).

Tom was a spotty faced teenager in 1921 when his career in wine kicked off. Over the next 55 years he turned winemaking in Hawke’s Bay on its head, scooping many accolades for his premium, complex Chardonnay and Bordeaux-style reds. You don’t get awarded the Order of the British Empire for nothing you know!

So when Chris Scott, chief winemaker at Church Road, decided he wanted to add a Pinot Noir to the McDonald Series range they had to step out of the Hawke’s Bay region for the first time. And where else would they go but Central Otago.

In the words of the Chris and the team “The pursuit of a great Pinot Noir to add to the Church Road stables has taken us outside of our Hawke’s Bay home, to the beautiful region of Central Otago. Here, a combination of exceptional soils, cool nights, warm days and low rainfall all converge to make for one of the greatest Pinot Noir regions in the world.”
