Poggio Anima Belial Sangiovese IGT. Wow, what a mouthful. And so’s the wine! Just wait until you wrap your laughing gear around these modern looking but traditional style Italian reds from Poggio Anima.
This is their Sangiovese and, to keep it simple stupid, they’ve colour coded their labels. This one’s aqua and on the label it features some kind of angry bear with wings. Apparently that’s Belial, who in Jewish texts is known as one of the four crown princes of hell, the purest definition of lawlessness.
Which is a little bit like the Sangiovese world there in Tuscany. Despite strict Italian wine laws with the production of indigenous varieties, renegade winemakers are breaking all the rules to produce “Super Tuscans” and other wines that ain’t to the letter of the law!
Not here though. This is 100% Sangiovese from a single vineyard in Siena, Tuscany. And the final word from the winemaker himself – “A silky texture and smooth, well-balanced
tannins. This is a wine that fits nicely on the table or to take down a second glass on its own.”
