Holy Moly! Wirra Wirra’s Church Block Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2021 is an early contender for Aussie red buy of the year! What you are getting here for a snip over $20 is nothing short of breathtaking!
The wine has caught the eye of the international wine media after making it into an incredible shortlist of 8 Australian wines at the World’s Best Sommelier’s Selection 2024 – a panel of 16 of the world’s leading sommelier’s.
Other Aussie names to make the small list were big hitters like Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz ($300), Penfolds Bin 144 Yattarna Chardonnay ($200), Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz ($120), Penfolds Bin 707 ($1000) and Penfolds Grange ($900-1000).
And it doesn’t stop there! The international critics are absolutely lapping this one up. The wine also made famous UK wine writer Matthew Jukes’ Top 100 Australian Wine list for 2024.
Jukes said “This wine is sometimes discounted to £10 (NZD$20), which makes it one of the most important, skilfully blended, heritage soaked red wines on earth. I cannot wait to gauge peoples’ reactions to this toned and revitalised red wine. I have a feeling that the most stuck-in-the-mud Europhiles might weaken when presented with 2021 Church Block!”
Aaaand there’s more….
93/100 & Top Value Award (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“An excellent cabernet, and not for the first time, astonishing value for money.”
92/100 (Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front)
““The quality of this wine is remarkably consistent and again here we’re in keen buying territory. Indeed if you’re looking for a good solid red, served straight down the line, then this 2021 Church Block is a no-brainer”
90/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“A canny blend of 50/41/9% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz/merlot. Stellar value and the sum is far greater than its parts.”
90/100 (Wine Enthusiast)
“This is a dense, focused and velvety-textured wine.”
The Church Block was the first wine produced by Wirra Wirra’s founder Greg Trott back in 1972 – named after one of the original vineyards that runs alongside a small church built in the 1850s.
This 2021 vintage is Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Shiraz (41%) and Merlot (9%) using all McLaren Vale fruit. This is an absolute beauty for the money – drink now or cellar for 10-12 years from vintage.
