If you haven’t visited the eastern end of Waiheke Island, you’re missing out big time. Nestled in among sandy beaches, coves and picture perfect Aotearoa coastline you’ll find the Man O’ War vineyard.
In 1769 Captain Cook saw the coastline’s potential for timber for the Royal Navy (thus the wine’s name). In 1993 the family behind this range of wines planted their first vines.
Their estate white label Bordeaux blend has always been bang on for the money in our opinion and a great introduction to some of their more serious styles, if you’re prepared to splash out a bit more for the likes of Ironclad.
They’ve relabeled this wine these days as their ‘Island Blend’ with the make up of the wine changing slightly year to year. This 2023 release is a Cabernet Franc (37%), Merlot (33%), Syrah (23%) and Petit Verdot (7%) blend. It’s a rich, heart warming Waiheke red using fruit from Waiheke and neighbouring Ponui Islands
This has consistently been a top value Bordeaux blend over the years, and well priced for a decent Waiheke red! Loads of big, bold, rich flavours and sweet, ripe tannins with a touch of spice. Good to cellar for 3-5 years.
