“Our heritage is where the sun is shining all year and with a bottle of Doppio Passo you can literally taste that sunshine all year long.”
Doppio Passo is an Italian wine name that’s been around for over 100 years now and they’re a big believer that drinking good wine doesn’t need to be complicated. We’re all about that.
They produce wines in the regions of Italy where the grapes grow best – their Primitivo comes from lush countryside of Apulia in Puglia (the southern eastern part that looks like the heel of Italy’s boot) which is one of the world’s oldest wine growing regions in the world.
Whether you’re a Primitivo lover or totally new to the variety it’s hard to not be impressed by the sheer value for money going on here. The wine is imported into NZ by another Master of Wine Steve Bennett and as Master of Wine Bob Campbell says “Steve has built his reputation on the quality of his imports.”
This is 100% Primitivo (also called Zinfandel in the US) and it’s your typical full bodied, inky, juicy red with a heap of blueberry and blackberry flavours with a touch of exotic spice. The secret to producing this smooth, luscious, flavoursome red is grapes being picked at two different times with some grapes picked at a later date for extra intensity. Pair it with red meats, mature cheeses and hearty pasta dishes.
Here’s a fun Primitivo fact – the name Primitivo comes from the Latin word “primativus” and the old Italian word “primaticcio,” whichg mean “early ripener” or “first to ripen.”
