Anthony Joseph Vidal was just 22 years young when he jumped off the ship from Spain way back in 1888. After purchasing a small section in Hawke’s Bay in 1905 he converted the stables that occupied the land into a wine cellar and hey presto – Vidal Estate was born!
Wind the clock forward a few decades and the Vidal Reserve Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon has become one of the most reliable on the market. In fact just a couple of years ago this label took out Michael Cooper’s Best Buy Red of the Year!
More recently in April 2024 this wine made Michael Cooper’s “Wine of the Week” picked in his column for The Listener. Coops said “Looking for a classy, great-value red? Grown in the Gimblett Gravels and matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, this 4-year-old is mouthfilling, with strong red berry and blackcurrant flavours, finely integrated oak, spicy, nutty notes adding complexity and ripe, supple tannins. Best drinking 2026+.”
Using Merlot, Cabernet and Malbec fruit from their prized Gimblett Gravels vineyards and given 18 months in French oak this is a darkly fruited, mouth filling and supple red. Just the style red to bust out when Mum’s Sunday roast is being served at the dinner table.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
