A label refresh means this premium Otago producer has slashed stocks of their 4 1/2 Star Waipara Valley Pinot called “Alex K”– and boy are you in for a treat with this one. What was crafted to sell at the $20 mark has been slashed by 25% down to $14.99. This is a banging value for money Pinot, ready to go now.

While Kalex are best known as a Central Otago producer they do source fruit from other areas like Waipara in north Canterbury, a hot spot for amazing aromatic whites and awesome bang for buck Pinots.

This 2014 vintage has got six years under its belt now and is still drinking superbly. Recently reviewed by two local critics, it came out with big thumbs up from both…

    4 1/2 Stars, 91/100 (Sam Kim)
“A beautifully maturing pinot, the fragrant bouquet shows dried cherry, earthy mushroom, toasted spice and almond characters. It’s juicy, smooth and lingering on the palate with succulent fruit flavours together with elegant savoury nuances, wonderfully framed by fine, grainy tannins. At its best: now to end of 2020.”

    4 Stars (Michael Cooper)
“A North Canterbury red, offering great value. Ruby-hued, with a hint of development, it is fragrant and sweet-fruited, with mouthfilling body, cherry, spice, herb and nut flavours, showing considerable complexity, and a smooth finish. Drink now to 2020.”

Kalex are a premium Central Otago producer founded by Alex Kaufman, a Polish American businessman, entrepreneur and holocaust survivor. He arrived in the US with nothing but the clothes on his back and a quarter in his shoe. His later success in business and love for wine lead him to NZ and specifically Central Otago, where he started the Kalex label.

You won’t find many (if any) better value Pinots for under fifteen bucks. Grab a box and quaff to your heart’s content! No need for any further cellaring, that’s already been done and this wine is ready to go for the remainder of 2020.
