The Piqueras’ are a fourth generation Spanish winemaking family nestled away in Almansa, south east Spain, crafting seriously good wine for over 110 years.
Their family owned vineyards sit a whopping 750-950 metres above sea level and with high sunshine hours and low rainfall the old vines, planted on stony, lime rich soils, work their arses off to produce grapes full of intense flavours. There’s even an organic sheep farm on the property where they let their fluffy little friends roam free to help keep the plant life low and the natural fertiliser high!
NZ Master of Wine Steve Bennett scours the wine world in a hunt for some of the best value for money wine bargains he can (literally) sniff out. He rates Piqueras as “One of the best value producers I’ve discovered in my 29 years in the industry” and we wouldn’t disagree, everything we’ve tried by these guys has been seriously good for the money. So it’s no surprise to see this 2021 release of their Piqueras Valcanto Syrah is on the money again.
Aged six months in 100% American oak it’s medium to full bodied, silky, rich Syrah with a touch of spice. A Double Gold medal winner at international wine shows and Steve himself said simply “This wine massively over delivers for the price.”
