“What does 200 million years of manifest minerality taste like? Jean-Francois Clouet put the answer in this bottle.”
Chalky is the latest release from boutique Champagne producer Andre Clouet. Jean-Francois is the current Clouet running the show and as the man himself says “No matter what I do, chalky soil is stuck to the soles of my shoes. Its been a part of me since I was a child!”
In fact chalk in the Champagne soil goes back a bit further than that – try about 200 million years ago and the Jurassic era!
The very cool and very limited (seriously, only 120 bottles were available for the NZ market!) Chalky Champagne comes presented in a special white coated bottle with a chalk cliff designed white gift box. It looks super cool.
A Blanc de Blancs style Champagne made entirely from Chardonnay grapes. For the Champagne hardcore/geeks out there that want to know – one third of the Chardonnay grapes were grown on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Reims and two thirds on the Côte de Blancs. Then aged for 72 months on lees in the Clouet cellars.
As for the taste? Jean-Francois says “200 million years of minerality poured into the bottle as liquid chalk, what a smooth, delicious mineral hammer!”
