Cava from Spain and Prosecco from Italy. Two sparkling styles that have taken the world by storm, simply for the fact that you can grab a decent bottle of the stuff at half the price of an entry level wine that has the word Champagne slapped on the label!
Cava is made in the same way as Champagne, called Methode Traditionelle which means it’s fermented a second time in the bottle to achieve bubbles. It’s a lot closer in terms of taste to Champagne than Prosecco. Like most of the wine coming out of this Spain these days it also offers great value for money.
Arts de Luna Cava Brut Nature is made by Bodegas Murviedro and imported into NZ by Master of Wine Steve Bennett, who loves nothing more than travelling the globe in search of the best wine bargains from around the wine world.
As well as passing the test from that Master of Wine, it also got good scores from two other local critics…
4 1/2 Stars, 91/100 (Sam Kim)
“Brilliantly fresh and fragrant…finishing refreshing and delectably appealing”
88/100 (Bob Campbell MW)
“A sophisticated sparkler with a silken texture and good palate weight. Good value at this price ($18)”
It is made exclusively from 85% Macabeo and 15% Chardonnay grown on vines in the area ‘Medio Día’, where the sparse land with chalky-clay soils is exposed to the continental climate with Mediterranean influences. And if that all sounds like gobbledygook to you don’t stress! Just know this is a stylish sparkling wine with a creamy texture and refreshing citrus fruit flavours.
