They’re the world’s leading wine brand from Spain, they ship around 2 million cases globally every year, they’re the #1 selling Spanish wine brand in the UK. Wow! Whatever Campo Viejo (that’s “KAHM-poh VYAY-hoh“) are doing to their grapes, they’re on the money!
Best known for their world best selling Rioja red wines they also produce another style Spain is well known for – Cava! Cava is to Spanish sparkling wine what Champagne is to France. Although technically they can’t call it Champagne it’s made in the same way, in NZ we call it “Methode Traditionelle”.
Produced just outside of Barcelona in Catalonia, this is aged for 18 months in Campo’s cellars before being released as a Brut Reserva. Campo’s chief winemaker Elena calls it a “well-balanced, elegant sparkling and the ideal accompaniment for celebration.”
If you’re in Spain why not go check out Campo’s vast cellars. When we say vast cellars we ain’t kidding. Head along to the Campo Viejo winery and you’ll see vineyards and countryside with a back drop of mountains…plus a couple of small buildings. Wait. Aren’t these guys one of the world’s top Spanish wine producers? Where’s the juice at? It’s underground!
Yep, in 2001 Campo Viejo asked a top Spanish architect to redesign their winery. The guy decided the view was far too good to touch so he designed the 45,000 metre squared winery to be built underground!
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
