One of the shining stars of the Margaret River region in Western Australia! Brothers David, Mark and Giles Hohnen formed Cape Mentelle (funnily enough named after the nearby cape with the same name) in 1970 and in 1985 started Cloudy Bay in Marlborough, making Mentelle a little bit of a big brother to NZ’s own Cloudy Bay. Cape Mentelle Shiraz
Cape Mentelle Shiraz is more Syrah in style (they get their inspiration from reds from the northern Rhone Valley in France) – medium bodied with heaps of spicy, savoury red and dark fruit flavours.
Nobody knows Western Australian wines quite like Ray Jordan – the main critic for the Western Australian Wine Guide publication. Ray has often raved about Cape Mentelle’s Shiraz and the 2017 is no different, with a 94 point score for this vintage. Ray said “Has a beautifully soft and generous mouthfeel with length through to a long finish. Excellent.”
Definitely one to try now with a few tucked away in the cellar for future slurping, a good 9-10 years ought to do it.
