Classic Bordeaux with a Kiwi connection! The current owner of Chateau Carbonneau is Wilfrid Franc de Ferrière and he tied the knot in New Zealand to a chick called Jacqui, where they lived for 5 years before returning to the Chateau in the south-eastern part of Bordeaux in France.
Previously all of the wine on the vineyard had been flogged off to the dirty big French co-operatives but upon their return Wilfrid and Jacqui put an end to that. They replanted the vineyard with the classic Bordeaux varieties (especially Merlot) and started producing all of their wine on site, it was a bit of a come back for Chateau Carbonneau!
As if that didn’t all sound fairytale enough they actually run a stunning bed and breakfast at the Chateau as well. Two hectares of park and gardens, a swimming pool and dining served with food sourced locally (including Jacqui’s own veggie garden!).
If you’re dining at the Chateau chances are you’ll be treated to their flagship “Classique” label – a 50/50 Merlot Cabernet blend. Softly textured, smooth and fruity style red that’ll go well with roast lamb, chicken or turkey, beef wellington or grilled chops.
