Champagne quality sparkling wine from England? Rather!
Yes, English Sparkling Wine, Blighty Bubbly, call it what you want, it’s is a thing it’s making serious noise in the world of quality sparkling wine. From a growing list of intentional awards to the fact that major Champagne player Taittinger planted its first vines in a village near Kent in 2017 with the first wine to be released in 2023.
Digby Fine English Brut is named after Sir Kenelm Digby – 17th century philosopher, scientist and pirate! He was also the bloke to invent the modern wine bottle in the 1630s. Thank goodness for Digby eh?
Stretching from the white cliffs of Dover the chalky soils of vineyards in Kent, Sussex, Dorset and Hampshire help provided ideal conditions to produce Champagne quality, English fizz. As the Digby crew put it, “it stems from England’s most lush Pinot Noir with rich, aged Chardonnay and plummy Pinot Meunier.”
Submitted to the 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, one of the world’s most meticulously judged wine shows, the Digby Fine English did more than just fine when it scored 97/100 and a Platinum award. That means every judge, who blind tasted it, awarded it a Gold medal status. Absolutely spiffing!
