A relative new comer on the Otago Pinot scene, produced on land that was originally an apricot orchard and a vineyard that is right next to a good old Kiwi camping ground, this is a wine label that has been getting the hearts racing in a relatively short space of time.
Since the first Pinot hit the shelves in 2006 they’ve scooped over 20 Gold medals, 3 Trophies, a dozen Five-Star ratings and 3 Silver medals – unreal!
This wine is irresistably good – a big style Pinot with silky tannins that had one judge falling their their sexy charm, he called them “cashmere smooth”. So good in fact the Royals (Will and Kate) couldn’t resist a cheeky quick visit to this star winery on their royal visit to NZ. Pinot fit for a future king!
This latest 2021 vintage has a Double 5-Star review to its name including from Michael Cooper who said “The classy 2021 vintage was estate-grown and hand-picked in the Defiance Vineyard, and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (31 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is mouthfilling, with vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, concentrated, ripe, savoury and well-structured. Still youthful, it should be at its best 2025+. Fine value.”
Try with duck, lamb or venison in berry fruit sauces (like a dark cherry chutney). Heaven!
