Oh brother! What a belter! After taking out the massive gong for Trophy Champion Chardonnay at the Royal Easter Wine Show 2019, Giesen The Brothers Chardonnay then went on to beat every other Trophy winner in the competition to be crowned king of the hill with a second Trophy for Champion Wine of Show!
There’s no fluffing about when it comes to judging The Royal Easter Wine Show, NZ’s longest running wine competition, now running for over 66 years. Over 1,000 NZ wines are put to the test with only a small portion (around 6-7%) taking a Gold medal, so competition’s tough. Those Gold medal winners then go head to head again to find the best of the best.
Mind you, it’s little surprise to see this label doing so well when you know that winemaker Nikolai St George is steering the ship. Formerly making kick ass wine at Matua, Nikolai took out Winemaker of the Year at this competition – the fourth time he’s won it in major NZ wine shows! So they’re in good hands that’s for sure.
Nikolai and the Giesen crew have used fruit from the Clayvin and Wairau Valley sub regions of Marlborough and crafted an absolutely banging quality Chardonnay. It seems crazy you can pick up this kind of quality for a snip under twenty bucks!
Deliciously juicy citrus and tropical fruit flavours with a savoury, spicy, smoky oak character. For the money this is one of the best Chardonnays doing the rounds right now. We were lucky enough to scoop some of the final stocks available from the winery (little surprise to hear their phone’s been ringing hot!) – so get in and grab a case or three while you can. A special wine for the money. Drink now and over the next 4-5 years.
