“Why do all the ladies go crazy for him? Because he is always the perfect Gentil-man”
It’s time to get head over heels for this truly iconic Alsace wine. There is nowhere else on the planet that produces amazing aromatic white styles quite like Alsace in France. We’re talking Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc.
Famille Hugel have been making wine in this world famous corner of the wine world since 1639 and with 12 consecutive family generations at the helm they’ve knocked out a few vintages in their time.
These guys are without a doubt one of the biggest names in the Alsace region and the ‘Gentil’ label is an absolute icon – and it’s pretty damn popular too making up over half of the winery’s total production!
If you’re new to the world of aromatic Alsace styles – why not try them all at once! Gentil is a blend of what they call the noble grape varieties of the region. Also called a “kaleidoscope of grapiness” it’s best described as the spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer, the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat and the refreshing character of both Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner.
One of the most amazing things about this wine is how rich it tastes but with just 4 grams of residual sugar it’s definitely a dry style white. Alsace producers don’t rely on the use of oak to add spice or richness to their wines, instead they let the balance of ripe fruit, acidity and alcohol do the talking.
A world class Alsace white that also makes an amazing food wine with a wide range of seafood like oysters, scallops, shellfish and sushi. Or even mildly spicy Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine.
