Junction Wines are owned by the Ashworth family with head of the family John having spent nearly a decade of his life between 1977 and 1986 playing as a prop for the All Blacks. When he wasn’t battering the opposition to a pulp and spilling claret at scrum time John was gaining a love for red of another kind while on tour.
“I had my first taste of Pinot Noir in France in 1977, it went to my toes, I fell in love with it and then I wanted to grow it.”
After hanging up his boots in the late 80s the Ashworths moved north from Canterbury to Takapau Plains in Hawke’s Bay (the junction of State Highway 2 and 50, thus the name!) and farmed sheep and cattle on 1000 aces. They also planted 25 aces of vines and started the journey of the family wine business.
The eldest of their boys, Leith, is winemaker of the family biz these days. This is the follow vintage to the Trophy & Gold winning ’20 vintage and Leith reckons this is even better! We reckon these guys are a little bit of a dark horse producer, so keep an eye out.
A gorgeous off-dry style with lush pear, apple and stonefruit flavours, a creamy texture and dry finish. Classy stuff for the money!
