Using all estate grown Central Otago Pinot Noir fruit from a single vintage (2015) and produced Methode style (same techniques as used when making Champagne) this is a richly flavoured, complex style fizz that is quite simply stupidly priced for a snip under $20!
In his 93/100 review, Wine Orbit’s Sam Kim said “This is fabulously elegant, showing nectarine, Gala apple, oatmeal and yeasty characters on the nose, followed by a brilliantly focused palate that’s finely textured and linear. It’s gorgeously poised and flowing with seductive complexity, finishing long and splendidly crisp. At its best: now to 2025.”
Kalex are a premium Central Otago producer founded by Alex Kaufman, a Polish American businessman, entrepreneur and holocaust survivor. He arrived in the US with nothing but the clothes on his back and a quarter in his shoe. His later success in business and love for wine lead him to NZ and specifically Central Otago, where he started the Kalex label.
