The Kurtz family have been growing grapes in the Barossa Valley since the 1930s – and the incredible old vine fruit from that era is still used today!
Steve Kurtz is the fifth generation of the Kurtz family in the Barossa and he’s spent his winemaking career with the likes of Saltrams and Orlando alongside greats like Nigel Dolan, Caroline Dunn and John Glaetzer, essentially Aussie winemaking royalty!
This is Seven Sleepers Shiraz. Called ‘Siebenschlaffer’ in Germany it’s a day celebrated on June 27 said to determine the summer weather ahead for the following seven weeks. Sounds like an excuse for a feast and a glass or two of hearty red to us!
This 2019 vintage of Seven Sleeps is a beauty. It was ranked as No.4 best Australian Shiraz in Cuisine magazine’s 2022 line-up scoring 4 1/2 Stars and selected as a Best Buy, one of the wines that offer just that extra bang for your buck!
The Cuisine judges called it “bold and juicy with vibrant berries, dark plums and spices…a well structured, delicious and flavoursome wine.”
It’s also been awarded a Top Value Award in The Real Review, with critic Gabrielle Poy calling it “Christmas cake in a glass – spiced currants and vanilla flavours round the ripe core. This is up-front and delicious, what you see is what you get. “
This is absolute benchmark Barossa Shiraz – and under $20 too! Seriously good value going on here. The only down side was Steve had bugger all stock left for the NZ market, so we’ve grabbed what we could when we could.
Steve says this is a wine made and released with immediate drinking in mind but it’ll comfortably sit in the cellar for 5-6 years from vintage.
