The Piqueras’ are a fourth generation Spanish winemaking family nestled away in Almansa, south east Spain, crafting seriously good wine for over 100 years. And what you’re looking at here is one of the finest reds these guys produce, using single vineyard fruit from one of Almansa’s most ancient plots, some 900 metres above sea level and from organically cultivated, ungrafted vines (usually producing wines that are more intense and powerful with better aging potential) that are over 80 years old.
The grape is Garnacha Tintorera (known as Alicante Bouschet in France) and it’s a grape that’s a little bit different from the rest. Peel back the skin from this grape and you’ll see its got red flesh, unlike other grapes which have clear flesh. This helps to make big, rich, juicy reds that are dark and inky in colour.
Aged for 14 months in 300L French Allier oak barrels. This is a full bodied and powerful organic, old vine Garnacha that’s truly all class! Ripe black fruit flavours with vanilla, cinnamon and clove.
The guys at Piqueras know a thing or two about bloody good Garnacha and what to pair it with. They recommend grilled red meats, cured meats and semi-cured cheeses.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
