Main Divide Pinot Gris is made by the world class Pegasus Bay crew. At one stage they weren’t all that bothered about adding their Main Divide label to the rat race of New Zealand Pinot Gris, a growing variety but yet to discover what it really wanted to be.
But when they had the opportunity to craft a style of Gris they were happy to stamp their name to, well, they were all over it like a rash! An impressive haul of accolades in previous vintages including being both Cuisine magazine and Michael Cooper’s No.1 Pinot Gris – this wine’s clearly shown it’s no one hit wonder over the years.
The 2023 is here and the good news is you’re in for more of the same if you love this wine! Rich, mouth-filling Gris that takes a walk on the sweeter side but perfectly balanced.
Scoring 4 Stars with Michael Cooper in his NZ Listener column, he said “Aiming for a “classic Alsatian style with a North Canterbury twist”, this aromatic wine was fermented and aged on its yeast lees in stainless steel tanks. Already highly expressive, it is full-bodied, with strong, peachy, gently spicy flavours, hints of pears and ginger and an off-dry, smooth finish. Showing clearcut varietal characters and drinking well now, it should break into full stride mid-2025+.
If it’s Indian or Thai for dinner this is the near perfect wine for it.
