On a 1769 voyage Captain Cook saw potential in what he saw at the eastern end of Waiheke Island. Shiver me timbers, it was timber! He saw the massive kauri trees as ideal masts for the fleet of wooden battleships – thus he named it Man O’ War bay.
If only he’d realised what potential this part of New Zealand had for growing grapes. And boy, does it grow them well!
The Man O’ War crew are as mad about Syrah as they are giving their vineyard blocks mad names. Their 2017 Man O’ War Syrah is produced from the following vineyards on the eastern end of Waiheke and neighbouring Ponui Island – Lunatics, North 3, Big North, Madmans, Niko face, Goats. Feral Donkey. Okay, so the last one isn’t a vineyard but you might find some trotting around on Ponui Island!
This is the third time since 2008 that Man O’ War have produced a Syrah under their white ‘Estate’ label – and we’re sure glad they did. Bright, juicy red and blue berry fruit flavours with a touch of spice and silky smooth tannins.
Here’s a tip – if you’re on the island make the trek over to the eastern side and visit the Man O’ War crew. Grab yourself a glass and enjoy the million dollar view from the lawn or beach – it doesn’t get much better!
