Jean Martell was a young merchant from the island of Jersey between England and France. Known as a location for smuggling it might explain what lead Martell into the world of liquor!
In 1715 he set up his own trading business in what would become one of the first Cognac houses. These days Martell is part of the big four Cognac producers along with Hennessy, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier.
If you’re new to the world of Cognac let’s give you a little low down. Cognac is an area in south-western France where this luxury brandy is made and VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale”. Much like their wine France also has a grading system for their Cognac. To be a “VSOP” cognac the youngest brandy in the blend has to be aged for at least four years.
A cognac to enjoy neat, on ice, or in long drinks and cocktails.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
