Wai (water) Para (sediment) – aka Muddy Water!
Muddy Water wasn’t created in a marketing room somewhere in the big smoke, it was named after the land the wine’s crafted from. Simple as that. The name might not sound all that fancy but the wine certainly is. Produced by the crowd at Greystone and taking an entirely down to earth approach to wine making, certified organic and all hand crafted.
This is Muddy’s flagship red and it’s a beauty. They know good things take time which is why Slowhand is their rarest Pinot. Only produced in exceptional years, in small batches, the vines are carefully and meticulously tended to (with their ‘slow hands’), aged for 16 months in oak. They also hold it back for a few years before release. You wouldn’t want to rush things now would you?
Think of it as an iron fist in a velvet glove – packing plenty of power with a smooth, rich texture. A Pinot of real class with now five consecutive scores of 95/100 by Master of Wine Bob Campbell! Bob describes this as “Mellow, integrated pinot noir with savoury, ‘forest floor’ bottle-aged characters adding extra complexity to bright plum, cherry, floral and spicy oak flavours.”
Being listed as a “Potential Classic” by Michael Cooper means it’s only a good vintage or two away from making the “Classics” list – the cream of the crop of NZ wine labels. Drink now to 2023.
