First released in 1962 the now iconic (and always seriously bloody good!) Penfolds Bin 128 label remains one of the most sought after in the premium Penfolds Bin range.
Almost 60 years on since its debut release and Bin 128 remains today a Shiraz from the Coonawarra region of South Australia. With its unique terra rossa red clay over limestone soils this cool climate region is a great contrast to others in the Penfolds Bin line-up like the warm climate Bin 28 Shiraz.
This is the latest 2022 release and it’s another cracking Coonawarra release with real cellaring potential…
94/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“A classic vintage for Coonawarra manifests in the glass in an inviting fashion with rich plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits with hints of fine spice, dried meats, licorice root, violets, earth and French oak nuance. It’s quite a savoury release with fine, coal-dust tannins and a chewy, sinewy structure with just the right amount of austere grip to its form. There’s great length of flavour here and there’s no doubt of the wine’s cellaring potential.”
90/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Deep purple-red colour with slightly loamy spice/earth aromas, laced with raw meats, the palate savoury and drying, lean and serious, black pepper notes emerging with time. (30% new French oak)”
Drink this one now until 2040. For the best food match try Moroccan lamb or beef.
