Penfolds launched their Bin 2 blend back in the 60s, a time when Aussies were slurping their wines in mini-skirts and psychedelic tie-die shirts and they called Shiraz “Hermitage” and Mourvedre “Mataro”. Crazy times!
Much like the fashion the Bin 2 series was ditched in the 70s as a white wine boom hit the Aussie wine market. These days Aussie winemakers love using Mataro (also called Mourvedre or Monastrell) for its blending qualities and Penfolds Bin 2 is going strong over half a century since its debut.
Spicy, savoury Mataro (14%) blended with plush, rich Shiraz (86%) from some of Penfolds best vineyards in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Langhorne regions. Penfolds head honcho Peter Gago calls this one “A lovely drink! This 2019 release captures the aspirational freshness, dimension and brightness of the alternative 60+ year old Bin 2 blend”
If you’re into cellaring this has potential too – try tucking it away until 2027 and beyond.
