We all know them as one of the world’s iconic producers but Penfolds’ class and craftsmanship doesn’t just stop with reds. This is the famous Bin 311 Chardonnay and we like to think of it as the “Baby Yattarna” – baring in mind a bottle of Yattarna Chardonnay will set you back a good $150-200 a bottle!
Since 2005 Penfolds have been producing some amazing Chardonnay from some of their cool climate sites like in Tumbarumba in New South Wales. This 2023 release is a mixture of fruit from Tasmania, Tumbarumba as well as Adelaide Hills, aged eight months in oak.
95/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“61/26/13& Tasmania/Tumbarumba/Adelaide Hills; eight months in 21% new French oak. A nicely composed, multi-regional chardonnay release. Plenty of concentration – no doubt the lower-yielding Tasmanian component playing its part. Peach and fleshy nectarine with dabs of oatmeal, soft spice, gentle oak, nougat and white flowers. Clotted cream, grilled nuts and grapefruit pith aspects come through on the palate, finishing long and true.”
92/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Light to mid yellow hue; smoky reduction and nutty aromas, palate medium bodied and rich, with big flavour for its size and a lot of secondary complexities from oak and lees. A fuller flavoured Bin 311. Smart chardonnay indeed. Already showing well. (Tasmania, Tumbarumba, Henty & Adelaide Hills)”
