Penfolds RWT Shiraz, also known as Penfolds RWT Bin 798, was released after several years of red wine making trials (thus the name RWT – Red Wine-making Trials) this was a result of demand for 100 per cent Barossa Shiraz back in the 90’s.

Launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage, it’s obviously no longer a trial! Penfolds wines are built for longevity and this wine is no exception, you will be rewarded with patience. As you’d expect it’s received some mighty scores from the cream of the crop of Aussie critics…

96/100 & Top Rank (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Glass staining dense purple colour; walnut, clove, nutmeg, pepper and dark fruits on the nose, very deep and concentrated in the mouth, with assorted black fruits and bitumen on palate, and lashings of powdery but mouth-coating and insistent tannins. A big and strongly built shiraz for the long haul. (14 months in French oak hogsheads, 67% new)”

96/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Sees 14 months in French oak hogsheads (67% new, 29% 1-year-old). The Penfolds RWT (Red Wine Trial) release is a sleek, polished rendition of Barossa Valley shiraz. Solid magenta/crimson in the glass with plush satsuma plum, blueberry and mulberry fruit notes. Hints of spice, dark chocolate, espresso, violets, licorice and earth. There’s a plushness to the fruit as it hangs tautly off its canvas of fine-grained tannin, and a sense of detail that conveys opulence and elegance at once, trailing slowly with fine, Barossan style.”

This is a great alternative (price wise) to Penfolds Grange. The grapes for RWT are sourced entirely from the Barossa Valley while Grange is a multi-regional blend. Highly collectable with serious cellaring potential – up to 2047!

Note: This has been carefully stored in our temperature controlled wine cellar.
