The first producer of a “dry” style Champagne, served by Queen Victoria at her flash banquets in the mid-1800s, served at the Royal wedding and regularly slurped since by the Royals of Monaco, even Oscar Wilde was drinking the stuff when behind bars for charges of indecency and sodomy!
Perrier-Jouet – we just call it “PJ” for short but if you want to sound like a pro make sure it rolls off the tongue pehr-ree yay jhoo-et (with the “T” pronounced). This is their world famous Grand Brut signature house Champagne…in a super sized, mega cool 1.5 Litre magnum format!
Sweet and usually popped open when dessert hit the table was how Champagne used to be – Charles Perrier changed all that when he created PJ’s Grand Brut, the first ever dry style Champagne. While Brut is known as “dry” when it comes to fizz, it actually means “brutal, rough or unrefined” in French, which is how people saw this style of Champagne back then (mind you supporters of dry Champagne called the sweet stuff gooseberry juice and chorus girl’s mixture!)
