The Piqueras’ are a fourth generation Spanish winemaking family nestled away in Almansa, south east Spain, crafting seriously good wine for over 100 years. And they don’t slap VS (Vendimia Seleccionada) on a label for no good reason – VS is a special collection of grapes from the best plots of an estate and only produced in small numbers. In short, they’re very special.
And what you’re looking at here is one of the finest reds produced under the Piqueras name, using fruit from a selection of their top vineyards from a hundred-year-old unirrigated vines, using organic farming methods from poor, sandy and limestone soils, all hand selected and hand harvested into small boxes. It’s then aged for 15 months in the finest French and American oak.
A 50/50 blend of Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera (known as Alicante Bouschet in France) – it’s a grape that’s a little bit different from the rest. Peel back the skin from this grape and you’ll see its got red flesh, unlike other grapes which have clear flesh. This helps to make big, rich, juicy reds that are dark and inky in colour.
Make no mistake this is a powerful, full bodied and yet elegant red. A very impressive wine packaged in a heavy weight bottle with each one individually numbered and bearing the signature of the winemakers – it’s sure to turn a few heads when you pop it on the dinner table!
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
