Surrounded by the snowy capped Alps the wine region of Piedmont in northern Italy looks a little like something from The Sound of Music! This is the home of some of Italy’s best fuller bodied red wines.
The wine most famous from this part of the wine world is Barolo, produced from the Nebbiolo grape, which is a massively tannic, big, rich red that requires a minimum of three years aging according to strict Italian wine laws. Barolo ain’t cheap – but boy it’s worth it! Think of it as a necessity on any true wine lover’s must-try-before-you-die list.
Aged for two years in oak before a further three years in bottle before release, from an excellent 2019 vintage in Barolo (rated 97/100 by Wine Spectator) these are wines built for the long term!
Scoring 95/100 with critic Sam Kim who said “It’s seductively savoury and complex on the nose with dark berry, bouquet garni, fine leather and nutmeg aromas, followed by a concentrated palate offering refined texture backed by refreshing acidity and grainy tannins. Firm and robust yet with harmony and flow, making it captivating and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2034.”
This is a wine that is begging to be paired with a rich, red meat dish. Here’s our tip – impress the other half and whip up an Italian Ragù dish and pair this wine with it. Mama mia, what a match!
