A legend of the Barossa wine scene if there ever was one! Hugo Gramp was born in the Barossa in 1895 and it was in this part of the wine world that he worked and lived his entire life. It was Hugo’s grandfather Johan who was a pioneer of the region, planting the first vines in 1847 and running the family wine ‘biz with his son Gustav (known as “Gramp & Sons”), until Hugo took over the reigns at age 25.

If you fancy laying your hands on a top class, age worthy red (drink now to 2035) with a bottle that’s individually numbered, well here’s your guy.

This is their latest 2021 vintage and it is quite simply a class act from go to whoa…

95/100 & Top 250 Australian Wines of 2024 (Tyson Stelzer)
“There is a classical harmony and allure to Barossa shiraz in the cool and late 2021 harvest, but only for those estates that achieved proper ripeness. The Jacob’s Creek red winemaking team have conjured one of their finest expressions of St Hugo Shiraz, centred on a core of blackberries and satsuma plums and confidently structured with firm, fine tannins. Dark chocolate and liquorice spin out of the confluence of high class fruit and distinguished oak.”

95/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“There’s pedigree in the name St Hugo, we all know that, and though it’s often the cabernet sauvignon that springs to mind, its 2021 shiraz is a cracker. Deep magenta-splashed crimson in the glass with classic Barossa aromas of dark plum and berry fruits cut with fruitcake spice, bay leaf, licorice, blueberry pie, ‘Old Gold’ chocolate and creamy oak. Fruit pure with a velvety tannin grip and a creamy, chocolatey edge as it sails over the palate. To be honest, it’s pretty delicious now but has the structure to cellar nicely over the next decade or so.”

We were taking no chances though so have painstakingly tasted several bottles recently (yes, it’s a bloody hard job sometimes)…we can confirm it’s A-grade stuff! Dense and dark purple in colour with dark fruits and a touch of spice. It’s in no hurry to drink some now, tuck some away in the cellar.
