If you know much about iconic Aussie red labels (especially anything with the words Cabernet and Coonawarra slapped on the label) you’ll know St Hugo. They’re up there with the likes of Wynns, Riddoch and Petaluma as the Coonawarra’s most premium Cabernet labels.
And if you know nothing about iconic Aussie labels but just fancy laying your hands on a world class, age worthy red (drink now to 2040) with a bottle that’s individually numbered, well here’s your guy.
This is their latest 2019 vintage and it is quite simply a class act from woah to go…
99/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“Matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). This is massive, the oak a central part of the experience right now. However, at the time of tasting, this wine still has a year and a bit to go before release. The time will be crucial for the ample black and red fruit to soak up that oak, step up on its shoulders and ride the chariot with muscle and power. Concentrated and focused; this will be great in time.”
We were taking no chances though so have painstakingly tasted several bottles recently (yes, it’s a bloody hard job sometimes)…we can confirm it’s A-grade stuff! Darkly coloured, full bodied Coonawarra Cabernet, loads of dark berry and cassis flavours with cellaring potential up to 2043!
It’s a class act.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
