Originally a sheep farm these days Starborough, owned and operated by the Jones family, are producers of award winning Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
Jones brothers Andrew and James run the gig, they’re the “Sons of the Soil”. Andrew carries the family farming tradition with crops and livestock. Viticulturist James runs the wine side of things with some help from a pretty on to it winemaker called David Clouston (he’s also the winemaker from Two Rivers and Black Cottage).
This is our kind of Pinot Gris! A full bodied, rich style with a lovely dry finish. A portion of the fruit spent time on lees giving the wine additional texture and creaminess.
It’s had a swag of great awards and critic scores – including 5 Stars in Cuisine magazine and making it into their Top 10 NZ Pinot Gris!
Scoring it 4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper said “Offering good value, the 2023 vintage (4.5*) was grown in the Wairau Valley (50 per cent) and the Awatere Valley (50 per cent). Light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling, fresh and lively, with strong, ripe, peachy, gently spicy flavours, slightly gingery notes, a touch of complexity, vague sweetness and very good harmony. It’s drinking well from the start.”
A great food wine. Try with Asian dishes like Thai or Indian curries, or light fish dishes. Yum!
