The Hut might be Tinpot but the wine’s anything but! Being a Hawke’s Bay country girl it makes sense that winemaker Fiona Turner would give her wine range a name that reflects her sheep farming background.
The Tinpot Hut in Marlborough is an iconic (and we’re guessing shabby looking!) landmark and meeting spot for high country musterers (people who round up livestock, like sheep). Fiona and her crew produce most of their wines in Marlborough (on a patch of land that was formerly a sheep farming station) but produce their Syrah from a vineyard in her home patch in Hawke’s Bay. Fiona says “I grew up in Hawke’s Bay and believe this region can grow exceptional Syrah. The texture of this wine is supple and velvety with flavours of ripe plumbs, black pepper and spice.”
Tinpot wines have certainly caught the eye on the international scene. It’s got listings in some of the UK’s leading Michelen Star restaurants like Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, Savoy Grill and Chez Bruce – star chef and restaurant owner Jamie Oliver’s a big fan too, he tweeted “Love your wine…always have some in the cellar!”
