“Made every year since 1972, it is Margaret River’s archetypal Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Undoubtedly one of Margaret River’s top reds! Heck, it’d sit at the big boys table of Aussie Cabernets given it’s a regular in the 95+ point category with top critics around the globe.
The Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon has, in their own words, all of the hallmarks of top Margaret River Cabernet – elegance, power and ageability.
This 2020 vintage is some seriously good Cabernet to get your mits on. It’s a vintage they describe as “rare and fine”. Using their finest fruit from Wilyabrup the wine is 85% Cabernet, 13% Malbec with a 1% splash of both Petit Verdot and Merlot in there too. Aged for 18 months in 33% new French oak and 67% oak that’s aged between 1-4 years.
And what do the critics think? They’re bloody head over heels for it…
96/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“A marker of great cabernet is being seduced by the aromas and flavours, which need to be in harmony: everything tucked in neatly, and let’s not forget beautiful tannins matched to fine acidity. Does this fall into that class? Too right it does. Varietal flavours are pitch-perfect and not quite understated, this is cabernet after all, and the result is a certain elegance and class. A gorgeous rendition.”
95/100 & Top Rank Award (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“This is Vasse Felix’s second-level cabernet, Tom Cullity being the top, but it’s as impressive as most wineries’ number one label. Fresh aromas including latent dark fruits and new-leather touches, probably oak-derived; there’s impressive intensity but also a lot of tannin grip that appropriate age will soften. There’s a core of dark fruits, blackberry and mulberry, that emerges the more you work the glass. There’s elegance as well as great power. It’s a sleeper, loaded with potential.”
A very special bottle of red. Drink now or cellar up to 20 years from vintage.
