Being NZ’s most awarded winery you come to expect anything under their premium Reserve black label has to be seriously A-grade stuff to make the cut.
This is Villa Maria’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and year after year it proves itself to be a world class Hawke’s Bay Bordeaux style red blend.
They’ve used the best parcels of fruit from their Gimblett Gravels vineyards and produced a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) and Merlot (45%), aged 18 months in French oak (of which 35% was expensive new oak) – it’s got the touch of class we knew it’d deliver!
The winemaker was clearly pretty happy with how this 2021 release turned out. “2021 rounded out a trio of outstanding Hawkes Bay red wine vintages. Grown entirely in the Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawkes Bay, our vineyards within this sub-region contributed parcels of exceptional fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from 2 blocks within our Vidal and Ngakirikiri vineyards and the Merlot is grown on our Omahu Gravels and Te Awa vineyards. The free-draining soils of these sites help ensure balanced fruit and canopy growth, contributing ripe flavours and tannin development. Yields are kept low allowing vines to produce fruit that is richly concentrated in colour, flavour and structure.”
It’s got potential to go for 10-15 years so make sure you drink some now, cellar some for later.
