A three day Pinot safari. How much fun does that sound? It’s what the panel of Cuisine magazine judges call their annual Pinot tasting, as they put in the hard yards and tried hundreds of NZ Pinots to find the best and better than best. Sounds tough, someone has to do it though right?
“We have to identify wines that will age. Great wines all have a swagger, even when they’re young” said John Belsham.
“It’s not a flavour, but a heartbeat, a soul, poise and tension” said Cameron Douglas.
“Wonderful fruit needs some serious scaffolding. Tannin management is the big challenge” said John Saker.
And so in their 2016 Pinot Safari one Pinot had to be crowned the king of the jungle – and it was Wairau River Reserve Pinot Noir 2014.
Being a Reserve label it’s got the very best parcels of fruit from this classy Marlborough producer, whose vineyards sit on the banks of the Wairau River. Dark fruits, dark chocolate and spice. Let the feast begin!
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
