Gru-what? It’s Gruner Veltliner (grew-ner velt-lee-ner) but you can call it Gru-vee for short. Actually for you wine nerds out there the full translation is “green grape from the village of Veltlin in the Tirol”.
Until about 30 years ago nobody had even heard of it. Now every semi serious wine store, restaurant or bar has a Gruner on their wine list. And there is nowhere but nowhere on the planet that does Gruner as well as Austria. This is their signature style, it’s what Marlborough SauvyB is to NZ!
A dry, zesty style white that’s full of complex flavours – think green pepper and the citrus of lemon and lime. It really is quite a treat! As one wine guru put it “It’s got the spice of Sauvignon Blanc, the acidity of Riesling, and the laid-back drinkability of Pinot Grigio.”
If you’re looking for the perfect match with Gruner stick with the Austrian theme and pair it with a Weiner Schnitzel! The acidity and spice will cut right through the veal, butter and oil just nicely!
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
