The Church Block was the first wine produced by Wirra Wirra’s founder Greg Trott back in 1972 – named after one of the original vineyards that runs alongside a small church built in the 1850s.
This is the follow up vintage to the 2021 release that one of the world’s top critics Matthew Jukes selected in his Top 100 Australian Wines of 2024. He called it “one of the most important, skilfully blended, heritage soaked red wines on earth.”
That’s some pretty high praise so you can imagine there’s just a little bit of pressure to the next vintage! But Wirra Wirra’s winemaker is the super talented, ex-Penfolds winemaker Emma Wood, which is why we’re saying anything with Wirra Wirra on the label is worth keeping an eye on…
93/100 (Ned Goodwin MW, Jamessuckling.com)
” An everyday claret for the sophisticate.”
91/100 & Top Value Award (Stuart Knox, The Real Review)
“Good length and it finishes with not a hair out of place. Great value.”
91/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“The Wirra Wirra worker bee, this does what Church Block typically does: deliver ample flavour and fruit plushness but with a measure of structure and freshness that makes it a great allrounder, a friend to many foods and weighted to invite a second glass.”
91/100 (Angus Hughson, vinous.com)
“The Church Block is upping its game in 2022 with the addition of superstar winemaker Emma Wood… Excellent power for the price…it’s a bargain for the cellar”
90/100 & Top Value Award (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“A very smart wine for this price-point.”
This 2022 vintage is Cabernet Sauvignon (51%), Shiraz (42%) and Merlot (7%) using all McLaren Vale fruit. This is an absolute beauty for the money – drink now or cellar for 10-12 years from vintage.
