There’s no place in Australia that produces quality Cabernet quite like the Coonawarra. Famous for its red cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa (that’s Italian for ‘red soil’) and stretching from north to south, this important stretch of land is among the most valuable patches of soil in the Aussie wine world!
In amongst the ‘Cigar’ is The Menzies vineyard. Established in 1975 it’s Yalumba’s pride and joy when it comes to producing first class Cabernet.
This is The Cigar 2020 vintage and we’ve got one word to describe it – smokin!
Here’s what a couple of the top critics across the ditch had to say…
93/100 & Top Rank Award (Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review)
“Deep purple-ruby. The nose shows plenty of spicy French oak in harmony with blackcurrant fruit and a herby touch. Everything is nicely integrated, and in the mouth it’s a very smooth exercise in Coonawarra cabernet. It finishes lip-smacking with charry oak aftertones and a long, savoury, austere finish. Classic Oz cabernet style.”
94/100 (Campbell Mattinson, James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“It feels good, and it tastes good. Indeed it’s one of the plusher expressions of cabernet that you’ll encounter. Blackcurrant, black olive, spearmint and sweet, smoky, resiny cedar characters put on a lovely show here. Anise and tobacco notes complete the picture. You can’t go wrong.”
Aged for 16 months in 17% expensive new French oak. A deep, dark purple tint in the glass this is a seriously good, full bodied Cabernet with structure and style! It’s a beauty!
Drink now or chuck it in the cellar and watch it evolve – this should be good to cellar up to 15 years from vintage.
