Already producers of an incredible line up of wines that most would give an arm and a leg for. We’re talking Church Road’s world class TOM, Grand Reserve, McDonald Series, Gwen and Estate range. They thought, heck, there’s always room for 1 more. Introducing, Church Road 1!
Single vineyard wines, hand crafted in small batches and all bottles individually numbered. This is the 2019 vintage Syrah using fruit from their Redstone vineyard in the Bridge Pa triangle. There’s no expense spared here – aged for 3 years in fine grained, seasoned French oak of which 36% was new French oak.
Scoring an incredibly good 96/100 from Master of Wine Bob Campbell, who said “From the Redstone vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle subregion. Rich, savoury syrah with plum, dark berry, pepper, anise and cocoa powder. A high-energy wine, with a suggestion of fresh herb flavours. An elegant rather than blockbuster red with good development prospects. Fragrant.”
It didn’t miss the attention of top critic Michael Cooper either. He scored it a top mark of 5 Stars and said “The powerful, graceful 2019 vintage (5*) was estate-grown in the Redstone Vineyard, in the Bridge Pa Triangle, and matured in French oak barriques (28 per cent new). Perfumed and dark, it is a very classy red, with lush, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, a vague hint of liquorice, fine, supple tannins and a lasting finish. A lovely young red, it should be long-lived.”
This is benchmark, first class Hawke’s Bay Syrah at its finest – full bodied, fragrant and supple in style. Enjoy this “1” now but it’s crafted with the long term in mind too – cellar up to 15 years from vintage.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
