Edetària’s heart and soul is owner Joan Àngel Lliberia. He grew up surrounded by vineyards and grapes – a life in wine was always on the cards given his grandad Llorens was an oenologist and parents Pepita and Angel were viticulturists.
They’re based in Terra Alta in Catalunya and while this sub region is known as Garnacha (aka Grenache) country this is a super premium, single vineyard wine made from the Cariñena grape, from 80 year old vines in rocky, ancient soil called “tapàs blanc”, Romans extracted stones for buildings from this soil many moons ago!
This super premium wine made Decanter magazine’s “Full-bodied Spanish red wines: 10 top bottles worth seeking out” list in April 2021. Master of Wine Sarah Jane Evans said “Terra Alta is Garnacha country, but in this single-vineyard Cariñena impresses. Its slatey, earthy aroma is followed by a palate laden with plump blueberry fruit, definitely fresh with notes of liquorice, and with a distinctly chalky, graphite finish. Long, warm, enveloping finish.”
This is an old vine wine already with several years bottle age under its belt and the potential to go much longer – try 10-15 years from vintage. Imported into NZ by Master of Wine Steve Bennett and in extremely limited quantities. If you’re looking to pair Carignan our pick would be with roast turkey, duck, pork or a meaty beef brisket.
Damn, you're looking young for your age!
