Elephant Hill set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German owners, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spare no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline, and boasts one of the finest winery restaurants in NZ!
The Elephant Hill “Icon” range is the absolute pinnacle of wine making at Elephant Hill and only ever released in the greatest vintages. With their meticulous standards you know it has to be better than good, it has to be near damn perfect!
Airavata is the name of the Syrah produced under their “Icon” range and this is from the 2018 Hawke’s Bay vintage and it’s a beauty. So you can imagine what you get when you combine a world class Hawke’s Bay producer with crazy high standards and a great Hawke’s Bay vintage – wine fit for a king! Or a god. Or a king-god of Elephants. That’s what Airavata means in case you’re not down with your Elephant lingo.
Produced using the very best fruit from their Gimblett Gravels and Te Awanga vineyards and aged for 20 months in French oak. It’s then held back for two and a half years before release.
Master of Wine Bob Campbell rated this a whopping 96/100 and a Top Rank award in The Real Review. Bob said “Flagship syrah from the Gimblett Gravels district. Elegance on a grand scale with violet, floral, plum, dark cherry and berry, black pepper and spicy oak flavours. Surprisingly accessible but with plenty of cellaring potential.”
Airavata is a cellar worthy Syrah for all fine wine snobs or. wine lovers with deep pockets. The Elephant Hill crew reckon this can be enjoyed for up to a decade from vintage. Extremely limited stocks, secure your little piece of Hawke’s Bay wine history.
