Now here’s a Marlborough wine that’s been flying high over the past couple of years. And not just ‘cos it’s named after the New Zealand falcon.
This was Cuisine magazine’s No.1 “Other Aromatic” in 2021 and the second year in a row it’d won this award! Then consider the previous 2020 and 2019 vintages have both been Gold medal winners at the Royal Easter Wine Show…you’re getting the idea. This is fast becoming one of NZ’s best value whites we reckon!
It’s not unheard of for wineries to increase the prices of wines when they win an award, as the acknowledgement leads to increased demand. However, at only $16 (full price), this beautiful viognier is still as good value as it was last year. A best buy indeed.
The Falconhead is the endangered NZ bird of prey, star of the $20 bill and occasional visitor to the vineyard! It’s produced by the crew that formerly owned Morton Estate. You might catch the odd one flying around their vineyards or stopping for a bite to eat at one of their vineyard feeding stations. After all, not only does the falcon look mighty impressive at up to 200 kilometres per hour, it also plays a key role in pest control for the vineyard!
If you’re new to Viognier (vee-on-yay) what a way to start. A deliciously soft, rich and full bodied style white full of creamy apricot and peach flavours. This is fast proving to be one of NZ’s best bargain buy whites at a quaffer price!
